A favorite bench in Marquam Nature Park

Marquam Nature Park is 176 steep and forested acres, acquired by the Friends of Marquam Nature Park in the 1970s after the land was at risk of being developed into a 600-unit apartment building complex. The Friends transferred the land to Portland Parks and Recreation in 1979 but remains active in its stewardship. Marquam Creek, which flows out of the gulch, was part of Portland’s water supply in the mid 1800s. Trails connect to Portland’s highest point, Council Crest Park, and beyond, to the Oregon Zoo and the Wildwood Trail, which stretches 30 miles along the Tualatin Mountains.

A nice before-work hike that I take, especially when I want to exercise my collie Georgia, is in Marquam Nature Park. The best feature of this hike is a favorite bench, placed solidly at a perfect vantage point that allows me to absorb the early morning forest.

This walk is close to the Lair Hill neighborhood where I live. I need to cross only one busy street, and within seven minutes, most of which is spent traversing soccer and ultimate Frisbee grass, I am at the entrance to the natural area. I choose the right-hand trail.

The water fountain always works and it has a lower spigot for my dog. I am in way too much of a rush (especially before 7 a.m.) to remember to bring a water bottle for me, much less for Georgia. But at Marquam Nature Park, I never have to worry.

This hike is great for heart and butt strengthening. While not particularly long, a few steep sections remind me that I am not in the shape I thought I was, and only three months remain ‘til ski season.

I enjoy this place; the light, smells, sounds, and quietness.
